A prolific writer and actor, Spalding Gray touched millions with his funny, insightful and honest stories about his triumphs, tragedies and struggles with daily life and depression. His widow, Kathie Russo and director, Lucy Sexton have compiled a series of unpublished works, poems and monologues to continue Gray’s conversations. In this daring tribute, the core cast consists of four renowned stage and film actors: Josh Lefkowitz, Carmelita Tropicana, Michael Cunningham, and Ain Gordon. Each night features a special guest including the original “Dreamgirl,” Sheryl Lee Ralph; WHYY’s Marty Moss-Coane; and local artist and 1812 Productions artistic director Jennifer Childs. Spalding Gray : Stories Left to Tell does more than recapitulate words-it truly embodies and invokes the genius and spirit of Spalding Gray.
Russo and Sexton will lead an interactive workshop on developing solo performance using Spalding’s work as a spring-board to assist participants in developing their personal stories and histories into performance art. The Saturday evening performance was sponsored by Portfolio Associates, Inc.

Ten Participants will use their personal stories and histories to weave them into short performance pieces. Participants will explore how performers translate their personal experiences into a larger truth. How do we remain both ourselves and become a character portraying ourselves? How do we create a portrait of ourselves in which others can see themselves? These interactive workshops will include exercises in writing, moving and performing. The workshops will culminate in a showcase of the work created.
This is a two day workshop limited to 10 participants, who are required to participate both days. To enroll, please send a brief personal statement detailing who you are and why you would like to participate to Lisa Nelson-Haynes at firstname.lastname@example.org.
